Ngāi Tauira – the Māori students’ association, represents the interests of tauira Māori studying  at Victoria University. Ngāi Tauira provides a legitimate voice for tauira Māori whereby they can feel comfortable and culturally safe within a Western academic environment.

The aim of Ngāi Tauira is to help nurture, and foster the academic, cultural, political and social potential of tauira in a manner that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and its practices. Ngāi Tauira also supports any initiative that encourages the practice of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori at Victoria University.

Ngāi Tauira – te huinga tauira Māori, e mahi ana i ngā mahi mō ngā tauira Māori e ako ana i te Wānanga o Wikitōria. E hoatu reo tika ana mō ngā tauira Māori e taea ai te whakangahau atu kia whakawhitiwhitihia a rātou tikanga i roto i te taiao akoranga Pākēhā.

Te Tumu Herenga Waka 25th Anniversary

NAU MAI, HAERE MAI

Te Herenga Waka Marae is celebrating its 25 Anniversary with the unveiling of the Waharoa (entranceway). The event also includes Robbie Downes (former Tumuaki of Te Herenga Waka Kapa Haka and Ngai Tauira) Kawe Mate on the 6 December at a dawn ceremony - 5.30am.

A large number of manuhiri from around the country are attending this special event, and the marae would appreciate support from Tauira Maori at Victoria Uni to make it successful.

Tauira Maori are asked to come awhi at the marae during the day or evening on the 5th December 2011, or on the morning of the 6 December 2011. Grandma or Matiu are coordinating the allocation of mahi, jobs include helping set up different kai stations, prepping the kai which is a big rolling breakfast to cope with the numbers, cleaning and help setting up around the marae, etc on the 5 December 2011.

If you're helping out on the morning of the event, you can stay at the marae for the night, (bring your own blanket and toothbrush), if you think you'll struggle to get there on time. They'd appreciate awhi with the Haka Powhiri at 5.30am (so get there earlier say 4.30?), manning the kai stations and cleaning up the dishes, and whatever else needs to be done.

Its a good idea to figure out what your jobs will be before the day of the actual event, because marae staff will be in full tack mahi mode and hyped for the event, so might not appreciate lots of annoying questions. Nau mai, this is also an opportunity for whakawhanaungatanga.
